platau wins UNIDO competition
In the context of Beirut Design Week 2018's theme- Design and the City- UNIDO and Beirut Design Week teamed up for an urban design competition. The brief called for small-scale urban installations that are driven by inspiring characteristics of Al Mina, Tripoli and its inhabitants. Our proposal - INTERSTICE- looked at the spatial situations that exist in the narrow pedestrian streets of Al Mina. In these alleyways, a tension exists between the buildings' openings and protrusions, and the public realm of the street. INTERSTICE tends to play on this relationship by linking the two- private and public- realms , but at the same time creating a subtle separation between the two. Selected by an interdisciplinary jury as the most promising concept, the project will be produced together with local carpenters and the Vocational Training Centre in Zgharta; and tested during Beirut Design Week on site.
