The Bay of Vlora is located where the Adriatic meets the Ionian Sea. The scenic properties of the bay are unique, yet the city is in need of promoting its assets and setting itself as a port of importance. The Vlora waterfront competition is an opportunity to rethink the role, program and design of the major public space of the city.
We propose to reconnect the waterfront to the city by extending main arteries of the city unto the waterfront spaces, connecting green systems of the bay to key spaces by the water, and amplifying the waterfront’s existing uses: a ferry terminal and civic square in extension of the city’s main boulevard, Community gardens and playgrounds facing low density neighborhoods, public piers with boating and water sports along the western edge… The proposed zones are unified in a concrete boardwalk materiality that unfolds in different typologies, integrating lighting, landscape, public amenities and urban furniture.
