Exhibition: Studio work showcased in "We Design Beirut" Exhibition

Sandra's students' work was exhibited in the "We Sustain" Exhibition at the Abroyan Factory, part of "We Design Beirut" event which ran from May 23rd to May 26th, 2024. "Climatic Devices" and "Hybrid Materiality" were two exhibited projects part of the Sustainable Design studio taught by Sandra in Fall 2023, which investigated the relationship of architecture and climate through materiality, performance and architectural aggregation.

Finalist: Arquine 2024 Competition

Among 256 entries, platau was selected as a finalist for the Arquine Competition for a temporary pavilion to be built during the 2024 Mextropoli festival of Architecture in Mexico city, set in Alameda Central, the oldest urban park on the American continent. For this pavilion, we imagined an architecture exploring the inseparability of the natural and the cultural environment in which it is set.

We are proud to announce that Sandra Frem was the recipient of the Graham Foundation grants for 2023 for her upcoming book “Shifting Grounds: the ground between form and practice in Beirut”, to be published by Actar Publishers. The book is co-edited with Carla Aramouny and based on the Beirut Shifting Grounds research project that was curated by platau for the 17th Venice Biennale in Architecture in 2021.

Award: Buell Prize in Architecture, Climate Change and Society

Sandra was awarded the 2023 Course Development prize organized by the Buell Center at Columbia University for the third consecutive year. The project was presented by Boulos Doueihy at the ceremony in Amman, Jordan on November 16-17, discussing its concept and the values it brings to its respective function, site, and community.

“Creative Collectives”, a research project conducted by platau was exhibited in the event “Beyrouth, une ville à l'oeuvre” organized by the Institut français du Liban at the Abroyan factory in Bourj Hammoud. The exhibit opened on September 29 and was followed by a round table with our co-founder Sandra Frem, curator Hala Younes and David Mangin on the question of public space in the contemporary city.

Winners: UNIDO competition

platau‘s proposal “Interstice '' was selected as a finalist in an urban design competition organized by Beirut Design Week and UNIDO . The project is a small-scale urban installation that is driven by inspiring characteristics of Al Mina, Tripoli and its inhabitants. Selected by an interdisciplinary jury as the most promising entry, the project will be produced together with local carpenters and tested during Beirut Design Week on site.

With more demand on park space for diverse needs; there must be a shift in the design and governance of parks to envision a flexibility with a supportive infrastructure. Sandra Frem will present platau’s research to revive the Tyre Public Garden. The research was commissioned by Nahnoo, culminating in a talk with the locals on Thursday December 14th, at Tyre’s Cultural Center.

Located in the Tumanyan Park in Yerevan, the project brings together designers and local craftsmen in a workshop setting order to create analog products; bridging local knowhow and culture with innovative, contemporary design approaches.

As part of platau's growing research in the resiliency of cities and their ability to resist complex stresses and challenges , Sandra will be on the team of Resilient Byblos, which is part of the 100 resilient cities program, pionnered by the Rockefeller Foundation, and will help in advancing the city's projects that meet resiliency goals. Selected in early 2015 to be part of the 100 Resilient Cities network, Byblos released its Resilience Strategy in 2016 and is currently in its implementation phase

The Sursok apartment is completed after 12 month of construction works. the scheme reinforces the apartment's spatial arrangement by revealing the structural concrete wall that runs along its length, allowing its linearity to become the backdrop for the apartment’s main feature: a multifaceted steel "spine".

The chapter TRANS [FORMING] NAHR BEIRUT proposes to rethink the Beirut river as infrastructure and public space through a design proposal addressing broader critical challenges in Beirut: water shortage, lack of public space, urban and ecological fragmentation.
