“Creative Collectives”, a research project conducted by platau was exhibited in the event “Beyrouth, une ville à l'oeuvre” organized by the Institut français du Liban at the Abroyan factory in Bourj Hammoud. The exhibit opened on September 29 and was followed by a round table with our co-founder Sandra Frem, curator Hala Younes and David Mangin on the question of public space in the contemporary city. 

Sandra will join the School of Architecture and Design at the American University of Beirut as an Assistant Professor of Practice for the next three academic years, where she will bring her interdisciplinary approach to design in the teaching of studios and courses.

Sandra will join the School of Architecture and Design at the Lebanese American University as an Adjunct Professor, where she will be teaching final years in architecture, focusing on Circular Futures.

Sandra and Boulos contributed to an edited volume “co-habitats” - co-edited by Hashim Sarkis and Ala Tannir- that reflects on Beirut’s urban ground as a cohabitat between diverse beings, in parallel to the exhibition of the same title.

Curated by Sandra and Boulos, Beirut Shifting Grounds finally opens on May 24th at the 17th Venice Biennale “How will we live together”, in parallel to a website www.beirutshiftinggrounds.com to make the research available to all, in light of Covid travel restrictions. 

Boulos will join the School of Architecture and Design at the Lebanese American University as a Faculty, where he will be teaching fourth year studio “Failed Architecture”, investigating abandoned architectural icons in Beirut with a speculation on their future.

We are honored to announce our participation in the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Hashim Sarkis. Located in the co-habitats exhibition, "Beirut Shifting Grounds' ' will be realized in collaboration with architecture faculty from the American University of Beirut and focuses on the ground floor of Beirut as a cohabitat between urban form and spatial practices. 

platau ranked among the top 3 finalists competing for the curatorship of the Lebanese pavilion at the 17th Venice Biennale.
The proposal- "Together! Life at the Ground Floor" -aimed to explore togetherness as experienced and materialized at the ground level of Beirut through sensory and participatory features in the pavilion. Congratulations to the winner.

The Cities Exhibition at the 2nd Seoul Biennale in Architecture and Urbanism is open to the public.
Featured in the Cities exhibition and looking at Beirut, "Creative Collectives" is a three-fold research investigating collective potentials in an increasingly privatized Beirut. 

The 2nd edition of the Seoul Biennale ‘Collective Cities’ seeks to question how modes of collective practice and action can challenge the current paradigms of development of our cities and offer resistance to the dominant systems of spatial production. As part of the cities exhibition curated by Rafael Luna and Dongwoo Yim, platau will present a research project "creative collectives". 

As part of the Beirut Design Week 2018 - Design and the City- platau held an open house titled “Scales of Practice '' that brought visitors closer to themes and methods that underlie our work. The exhibition took place during the Beirut Design Week onThursday 28th June 2018, 6 PM, at Bridge of Minds Headquarters in Mar Mikhael, Beirut.

In line with Freespace, the theme of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice,  the Places that Remain conference  aims to reflect on in the Lebanese territory, un-built spaces, their qualities, their histories and their potential. platau was selected in a peer-reviewed process to contribute with two design research projects to the discussion: Prosthetic Ecologies, and From Setback to Open Space, presented on the 23rd  and 24th of March 2018 .

How can Tyre Public Garden become a vibrant park where community thrives? With more demand on park space for diverse needs; there must be a shift in the design and governance of parks to envision a flexibility with a supportive infrastructure. Sandra Frem will present platau’s research to revive the Tyre Public Garden. The research was commissioned by Nahnoo, culminating in a talk with the locals on Thursday December 14th, at Tyre’s Cultural Center.

Sandra presented the Byblos Town Hall at the Lebanese Architect Awards 2016, winning the prize in mixed use building category. From 2010 until 2016, Sandra was the lead architect at Hashim Sarkis Studios,  and oversaw the project's evolution from a competition winning entry until its opening to the public.

platau launches Homekit, an prefabricated home produced by Dalal Steel Industries. This initiative offers modular homes delivered within weeks, and within affordable range. 

Sandra Frem is invited to lecture at the UCL DPU traveling workshop titled “Riverside Ecologies and Contested Waterscapes” on the 5th of September. The talk entitled “Prosthetic Ecologies” will offer new readings for the Beirut River that combine artificial and networked ecologies that can reimagine new connections between the river and the city.

Sandra Frem is featured in the book "Urban Design in the Arab World" co-edited by Robert Saliba for the international publisher Routledge, a critical reference on the state of contemporary urban design in the Arab world. The chapter TRANS [FORMING] NAHR BEIRUT proposes to rethink the Beirut river as infrastructure and public space through a design proposal addressing broader critical challenges in Beirut: water shortage, lack of public space, urban and ecological fragmentation.

platau will participate in the Beirut Design Week 2015's opening group exhibition " Based in Beirut", opening on June 1rst, 2015 at 6 pm. Our contribution, LOOP, is an experimentation in the properties of rattan, to create new linkages, and new deriving forms.
